Summer Break

So I've been on summer break in the UK and haven't had much time in front of the tube. But of course I've been addicted to iTunes and have managed to finish off (almost) season one of The Tudors. The Tudors obsession is thanks to my lovely two friends who shall not be named that have a serious problem with the romanticism of the English monarchy. Other iTune addictions this summer have been Season 3 of Weeds and Season 2 of Dexter. Does someone like Showtime?

Anyway, I find that I'm probably spending just as much money downloading these programs as I would be back on my deluxe-supreme-highly expensive-Comcast upper tier plan. So I'm debating at this moment whether or not to go back to HBO or Showtime. I've always been a HBO girl but at some point- when you've got responsibilities like a mortgage, a cat and a husband- you've got to wager your cable spending. Do you like how I put my husband at the bottom of the list? And I probably won't be earning any brownie points as I put him as a "responsibility."

I'll keep you posted on my decision regarding upper tier cable. No rush though as I've missed the new season start of just about every returning program on Showtime. But I'm sure I can catch up with re-runs in one weekend. Oh and The Tudors are renewed for another season so here we come!

Also, please no spoilers! This is the first time I've ventured into the delayed programming zone. I'm constantly living in oblivion of what's happening right now during the current season. I'm soon to become one of those irritating people that puts their hands to their ears and scream "I haven't seen it yet, shut up!"

Father Knows Best

On this Father's Day weekend...I'm wondering how far have we come? I love my father to bits. He was the unconventional father when he came home from work...cooking, cleaning and taking my mother's orders. And I hear from the latest studies that some men these days are following suit, helping more with parenting and housework...AND this makes for oh so happy homes. But I stop to wonder today how fathers are portrayed on TV? Can you tell me? I'm wondering if TV or movies portray fathers as equal partners in the house and in parenting. (By the way I'm really looking for people to disagree with me here...maybe tell me I've got it all wrong..). I've got some friends who are new parents who are streamlining parenting and their marriages with what we call shared partnerships...this comes with things like family friendly careers and shared chores. Do you see this on TV? I don't. Here's a list of TV and movies that portray fathers in not so conventional roles...(my list of negative portrayals could last about 5 pages).

1. Lars and the Real Girl...the father in this film, oh so the macho male, was shown washing dishes, doting on his wife and listening to his wife.

2. Jon and Kate Plus 8 (I know...I know...) But really Jon is a equal partner, making dinner, cleaning house, in tune with his household.

3. ...I'm all out...please share some with me?

Sorry that I haven't been around. Traveling, working, flying, and generally NOT wathing TV. SO sad! Here's the latest video from Weezer. One of my great loves of high school was Weezer. I can't wait for their new album.

I did get to watch RECOUNT on HBO. IT was good! Laura Dern was too much as Katherine Harris. This movie took me back to my MSNBC addiction days...watching the horror we call voting enfold with Tim Russert in my SF apt.
